I need suggestions for a comfortable sleeping mat or air bed?
I looking for one under $100, preferably under $50, but comfortable. I'm looking at a size from single/twin - queen.
I prefer firm, smooth beds, but I'm open to all suggestions, thanks.
Check the sporting goods section of your local discount department store. (Wal-Mart, Meijer, Kmart, whatever you've got near you.) If you are willing to get the store brand instead of a big brand like Coleman, you can get one for under $20, if you catch a good sale, maybe $30 regularly. (Keep in mind that these are just the basic plastic air mattress, with no electric pump, no pressure gauge, no pillowtop, etc.) You can get an electric or battery-operated pump for about $10.
The firmness of an air mattress is entirely dependent on the amount of air you choose to put in it. Because you like yours firm, you may be tempted to blow it up all the way tight, but remember that when you put your weight on it, it will become firmer. If you blow it up all the way before you lie on it, it will wear out quickly because of the pressure. Instead, leave it a bit "mushy" at first. Then lie on it, and add air only as needed.
I sleep on an airbed all the time for my bad back, and I considered getting one of the beds that's intended for continuous use, like Sleep Number, but I did the math and decided that it was cheaper to buy a new cheap air mattress 2-3 times a year. (They will last years with occasional use, say for camping or houseguests, but I sleep on them every night, so eventually they start to lose air.) You may find it more comfortable with a cloth mattress pad.
